The length of my writer's block

I have these notebooks where I keep handwritten copies of all the poems that I write. Today I got around to writing those haikus in it. Before those, do you know when the last poem that I wrote was?

October 2008. That's before I even started this blog. It's been a long, long, long time since I've written anything.

I want to be a better writer. I really do. I have "wordsmith" in a tattoo on my back, and I mean it. I just have this wonderful tendency to avoid things that are difficult or painful. So I've avoided the writers' block and dealing with it.

One of the things I have on my "to do" list is to go through all my writing as first drafts. I should do that. Some of those haikus were actually pretty good. With a bit of revision and editing they could be actual poems.

I think I'm going to add a day in my diary, once a month, to work on old pieces and do writing exercises and things. We'll see how that goes.

Project 200 - 131/69

And another one.

Project 200 - 130/70

So here's the next one. This was a test knit for a pattern I designed. Do you like it?

The pattern will be available from my etsy store soon enough.

Project 200 - 129/71

I had a craving to work with this bright turquoise Red Heart Super Saver yarn, so I made this. As I was making it I was looking around my flat trying to figure out where the hell I was gonna put it, when my glance fell upon my stark white chest freezer. I've decided to attach magnets to the points of the star, and put it on the freezer. Just as soon as I can figure out the best way to put magnets onto crochet.

Project 200 - 128/72

Say hello to this colourful little man.
You need to ignore all the colours. He's a creature I'm writing a pattern for, and I used the colours to demonstrate the different parts of the pattern. Apart from the eye, he'd probably be all one colour. I'll be making another one soon, without all the wacky colours. He doesn't have a name yet, either. Any suggestions? 128 down 72 to go

Project 200 - 127/73

Quick little project this one, but it really hurt my wrists. The yarn is huge and I used a crochet hook that was several sizes too small, but don't they look good?

Here we go. Cute little thing :-)

2012 Fantabulous Things: 478 - 482

478) Neighbours who take the bins out for you the night before trash day.

479) HPKCHC

This is the Harry Potter Knitting and Crochet House Cup on Ravelry.

480) When the boiler lights first time.

481) Fried egg sandwiches.

482) PB&J muffins.

---

I don't think anybody really reads this blog, you know. I doublechecked that long list of Fantabulous things I posted. Two of them I'd already listed - yankee candles and sausage & cheese muffins. I can understand people missing that. I can't believe people missed that I managed to list Chocolate Cream Pie twice within a few lines of each other. Tut tut.

Here are three free ones to make up the count:

- Cats yawnsniping each other.

- Real life letters that aren't bills.

- Waking up without a headache.

The 21st Tattoo

Those paying attention will have read my 10 Random Facts About Me blog yesterday. You'll also have noticed that I only managed to remember 20 of my 21 tattoos.

Runes around my wrist (they say "to be normal is an act of cowardice")
A jigsaw piece on my other wrist
Morse code for "believe" on my left forearm
A little angel on one shoulder
A matching devil on the other shoulder
A monkey on my right forearm
A monkey on my left shoulder blade
Klingon for "wordsmith" on my right shoulder blade
A Guiding trefoil on my back
An entwined red heart and purple star on my back
Wingdings for "pleasure" and "pain" separated by a pair of handcuffs on my back
A Mario mushroom on my left forearm
A Mario Goomba on my left forearm
A bitemark on my neck
A star on my face - by my left eye
An imp on my collarbone
A sun and two moons (representing my mum and my two sisters) on my right forearm
"Llama" in mirror writing on my right wrist

Last night I finally remembered the 21st tattoo. It's a little question mark above my left breast. Can't believe I forgot about that one - it was the first one I ever got!

10 Random Facts About Me

Another random blog to fill up a day (that last Fantabulous things one was for yesterday).

1) My shoe size is 8.. but I can wear 7 and 9, depending on the type of shoe.

2) I went to three different high schools.

3) When I was a kid I used to think I was allergic to garlic because I didn't like it. Now I can't get enough of it.

4) I have 21 tattoos: runes around my wrist, a jigsaw piece, morse code, an angel on one shoulder, a devil on the other, a monkey on my arm, a monkey on my shoulder blade, klingon, a Guiding trefoil, an entwined star and heart, wingdings (with a pair of handcuffs), a Mario mushroom, a Goomba, a bitemark, a star on my face, an imp on my collarbone, a sun and two moons (for mum and my two sisters), "llama" in mirror writing,

5) I can never, ever, EVER, list all of my tattoos at once. I always forget one or two.

6) Despite the three cats I have currently, and the three I've had in the past, I'm actually more of a dog person.

7) I love the rain. I'm sat on the sofa at the moment watching the heavy rain outside. I wish I had the confidence to go outside and dance in it. At my old place I had barely any neighbours, and would go right out and dance in the rain. Here there are too many eyes.

8) I collect frames. If you've been to my house, you've seen that my living room walls are flooded with assorted and random photo frames holding postcards and photos and funny pictures and my cross stitch work.

9) My entire right side is dodgy. It's my right ankle that has the problems, my right eye that can barely see straight (and goes a-wandering when it's tired), and my right boob is slightly bigger.

10) I have body dismorphia. I have trouble with dieting and losing weight because I don't think I'm as big as I am. I don't feel as big, and I don't think I look as big as some of the big people I see on tv and in town.

There, aren't you glad you took time out of your life to read that. Learn anything you didn't know?

2012 Fantabulous Things: 469 - 477

469) Waking up 1 minute before your alarm goes off.

470) Getting told jokes by little old ladies on the bus.

Why do the bees hum?
Because they can't remember the words.

471) Dogs on the bus.

472) Winning on a scratchcard.

I didn't win yesterday, but I do win occasionally. Not much. Just £2 here and there. Once I won a whole fiver.

473) Yarn on sale.

474) THe smell of fresh cut grass.

475) Donating blood.

476) Waking up next to someone.

Another thing I don't actually do, but it is really awesome when it happens.

477) Bacon sandwiches.

2012 Fantabulous Things: 122 - 468

Here are some more fantabulous things. It's a long list. Eclectic in some places, and themed in others. I had a realisation that 2012 is a LOT, and that I needed to get more done. What a Weekend!

So this weekend my friend Michael from Basingstoke came up to stay. On Sunday he took a train into Liverpool to go to the Hillsborough Memorial Service, and after I mentioned that I haven't been out in ages and could do with a day out, and because he's an absolutely wonderful man, he paid for me to go to Liverpool too. I didn't go to the service... I went shopping :D Because I'm a big girl. Not that I went clothes shopping or shoe shopping or anything. I went to Thornton's, and Paperchase, and the Lego store. This is the type of girl that I am. I also took some pictures.

This is the Liverpool Eye. We were meant to be having a ride, but it took Michael a lot longer to get there after the service than we thought, and we didn't get a chance.

I think this is a very good picture considering I couldn't see anything at all while I was taking it.

The Yellow Duckmarine!! I didn't fancy this one, but look how cool it is.

Tree! I got bored waiting for Michael.

My Liverpool zebra.. which I spent two days referring to as a giraffe.

Another picture I took while waiting for Michael.

Lego store!! I'd planned to buy some lego, but it's expensive. VERY expensive.

Shiny water.

The prettiest Costa Coffee in all the world.

The gravel around the base of the tree is glued down. Apparently Scousers can't be trusted to not steal gravel.

By the end of the day I was tired and frustrated and hurting. I severely overestimated my ankle's ability to walk so much after so long doing nothing. And the tour bus didn't show up. But it was a good day. A brilliant day. And I had a couple of personal achievements too. I spoke to strangers. I told one lady her suitcase was open, and I had a whole conversation with a young knitter in the train station.

Talking to strangers is a big thing for me... especially considering I've been episoding for the past few weeks. I've been off my medication for various reasons. I have an appointment with the Dr this week and I'm hoping she'll put me on a different anti-depressant, because mine isn't working as well as it should.

Now that my weekend distractions (Liverpool! Taybarns! Alcohol!) are over, my episode is back. I've been struggling to sit up all day. I have things to do, and I WANT to do them, but my brain just wants to zone out. I'm trying really, really hard though. I read a couple of self-help e-books over the weekend and they weren't as much drivel as I thought. Some of it really makes sense, and I'm trying to remember those bits.

SMILE MORE.
TURN NEGATIVES INTO POSITIVES.
CHOOSE TO THINK HAPPY THOUGHTS.
RELEASE THE PAST.
TALK TO STRANGERS.
SAY HELLO MORE.

I'm trying. I'm really trying. It's hard to explain quite how hard it is, because people don't often understand quite how difficult living with depression is. But I know that the people who read this who do have depression, or have dealt with it in others, will understand how big a triumph it is that I managed to speak to those strangers on Sunday.

It was definitely a good weekend.

Discworldathon

Quick note to let you all know that I've finished the 12th Discworld book. Well... I'm not sure what number Discworld book it is since my ordering when kablooey. But it's the 12th one I've read.

I'm gonna go back to reading the others in order now.

10 Days of Haikus

It's been a very busy weekend (see follow up post) and I haven't had a chance to blog, but I HAVE written the final three haikus.

Sunday...

Time for a day trip.
Never been to Liverpool.
I'm going shopping.

Monday...

A busy weekend
Results in a great big smile
and two aching legs.

Today...

Ten haikus written.
Some of them are halfway good.
At least I'm writing.

So there you go. I've written ten haikus. It feels good to be writing (creatively) again, even if most of it is rubbish. I'm going to try and keep it up. And of course I'll be subjecting y'all to the madness. (Insert evil laugh here).

10 Days of Haikus

I'm a wee bit drunk
Drunk as a very small skunk
And all out of words

10 Days of Haikus

Here is today's haiku. Can you guess what I've been up to?

So much paperwork,
Leering at me from my desk.
It makes my brain hurt.

10 Days of Haikus

Written at 2am this morning, just as I was getting to sleep:

I'm sorry readers
I forgot to blog today
Here, have some cookies

10 Days of Haikus

In keeping with the theme of the last couple of days, today's haiku is miserable:

I'm trying so hard
To keep myself together
I think I'm failing.

As you may have noticed, I'm not doing so well depression-wise at the moment. I'm trying my hardest to come through it, but most of the time I don't think I'm strong enough.

Labels Reboot

I have too many blog labels. Some of them are now redundant. So I'm rebooting them. I'm only going to use a few blog labels from now on.

Dear Mr Sandman...

I'm very used to having weird dreams. I'm okay with that. I'd rather have the downright odd dreams than the horrible nightmares. And the dating/sex dreams are definitely better than the horrible nightmares AND the odd dreams.

However, I have a bone to pick with you about your choice of Man. If I can't dream about Jensen Ackles or Ashton Kutcher, or Dr Who, I'm okay with dreaming about a Man I've actually met before. I'm even okay with dreaming about one of my Exes. But why, why, why, why, WHY?!! do I have to dream about the worst one? The one who was a huge mistake, and is now completely and utterly ugly and unattractive and unappealing?

Having said that, thank you for letting me dream about him as he was when I knew him. The first night was vaguely Memory-Lane-ish. The second night was a bit weird. The third night was getting odd. The fourth night was downright disturbing. I do have many other Exes that you could choose from. Much better looking and delicious and interesting ones. Some of whom I actually still give a crap about. If you could see your way clear to making tonight's dream about one of them, I'd be very appreciative.

Yours,

Colette (aged 29 and a half)

10 Days of Haikus

Another emo one:

I close my eyes and
Leave this lost and lonely land
For one where I smile.

10 Days of Haikus

Today's haiku is a little less lighthearted than yesterday. Sorry. I'm feeling down.

Alone and lonely.
Desperate to be loved.
Destined for sadness.

10 Days of Haikus

So I'm trying to blog at least once everyday. Aside from making the bloga little more interesting to read, and also because I'm trying to give myself more of a routine. I have checklists of certain things I want to make sure I do every day.

Usually I have an update for Project 200 or the Discworldathon, or some other randomness to blog about. For days that I don't, I have a list of blog memes/challenges and things. This is the first one.

10 Days of Haikus.

A haiku is a Japanese form of poetry characterised most famously by its structure of 3 lines and 17 vowels. The first line has 5 vowels, the second line has 7 vowels and the third line has 5 vowels. They're short and succinct, but that does NOT make them easy to write. I'm going to attempt to write one a day for the next 10 days.

An extra challenge is that I haven't actually written any poetry in years. I've had writers' block for a good 5 years at least. So wish me luck.

Here's haiku number one:

Sweet potato pie
A crazy mess to create
Delicious to taste

Discworldathon

I've finished another one. I would have finished a second one in the bath yesterday but I ran out of hot water and was getting cold.

So that's 11 of 39 books read, and £95.75 raised

Project 200 - 125/75

Teeny tiny little monkey...

125 down
75 to go

Also... I've done another Hogwarts bookscarf thingy. Still need to do Gryffindor for it to count as a complete Project though.
